When I arrived at the Da Vinci Science Center, they had a huge supply of the
innards to Push-Up (
http://distractible.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/blapig02.jpg) type
ice-cream treats. If you are unfamiliar with these, the ice cream rests on
a circular plastic piece (a disk with a rim) and a stick fits snugly into a
hole in the center of the disk, allowing the disk to be pushed up to disense
the ice cream out of the cardboard tube. If you run the stick through a
short length of a drinking straw, which serves as a bearing, and place one
of the disks on each end, you have a very simple, very inexpensive axle and
wheels.

Now, years later, since they come one disk to a stick, but we use two disks
to a stick, we have thousands of extra sticks. I have no idea where we
ordered them from because they were there when I arrived, but an ice cream
store that makes their own novelties might be able to help you identify a
source.
