The Center for Heritage Resource Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park and the National Park Service announce

"The Public Meaning of Archeological Heritage"
A Seminar in Archaeology and Interpretation

Wednesday, October 27, 2004
University of Maryland Inn and Conference Center

Archaeological resources form an integral part of public heritage. Interpreting archaeological resources for the public presents multiple challenges that require archaeologists and all kinds of educators to work together closely. To help meet these important challenges, the Center for Heritage resource Studies and the National Park Service have designed a one-day seminar that addresses interdisciplinary issues in archaeology and interpretation from the perspective of parks, museums, tourists and others. Seminar speakers are drawn from the University of Maryland, Smithsonian Institution, US/ICOMOS, and the National Park Service. Using panel presentations, interactive lectures and discussion, the seminar will specifically cover the following themes: Archaeological Heritage; International Perspectives on Archaeological Interpretation; Heritage Tourism; Museums; and Spiritual Heritage and Heritage Conflict.

The seminar will take place on October 27, 2004 and will run from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Participants may also attend a special dinner lecture beginning at 6:00 p.m. Registration and continental breakfast begin at 8:00 a.m. The tentative program for the seminar includes the following speakers: Gustavo Araoz, US/ICOMOS; Suheil Bushrui, UMD Bahá'í Chair of World Peace (Dinner Speaker); Terry Carlstrom, National Capital Region, Regional Director (invited); Erve Chambers, Professor, University of Maryland; Bill Fitzhugh, Smithsonian Institution; Frank McManamon, National Park Service; Paul Shackel, Director, Center for Heritage Resource Studies; and Marie Rust, Northeast Regional Director, NPS (invited).

Registration for the event is $175 and includes attendance for all presentations and discussion, continental breakfast, buffet lunch, morning and afternoon refreshments, and free parking at the Inn and Conference Center. Students (with valid ID) may register at the special rate of $100. Dinner following the event, with speaker Dr. Suheil Bushrui, is an additional $35. Registration deadline is October 13 - cancellations after that date will not be refunded. Please register early as space is limited.
