CALL FOR PAPERS

Session Title: Exposed Sites
and Burials in Areas of Drought: Aspects for Mitigation Measures.

Session Chairs: Mark L. Howe
and Danny N. Walker

Proposed session for the
Society for American Archaeology, 78th Meeting

To be held in Honolulu,
Hawaii, USA, April 3-7, 2013

Drought conditions over the
past several years have contributed to exposed landscapes and low reservoir
water capacities across the country and world. Below average or little seasonal
mountain snowpack along with low rainfall precipitation in lower elevations
have many reservoirs below optimum storage capacity. When many reservoirs where
constructed in the past century, many places of historic and prehistoric
habitation along rivers, tributaries and ground water sources were abandoned or
moved to higher ground. Abandoned towns, buildings, cemeteries, historic and
prehistoric sites are now exposed that recently have been under reservoir or
lake water for decades. This unintentional exposure has now caused problems with
general publicity due to lack of cover of unknown and recorded sites that were
not a problem before. As lake levels
currently fluctuate, damage to sites occurs by wave action, drying and
inundation sessions and general looting by the public. Concerns of what can be
done to mitigate these problems with lack of resources and funding along with
long term consequences of protection under eligibility criteria will be
discussed. This session will deal with problems of exposed sites and burials
due to drought conditions and what is being done and what can be done.

Interested researchers are
requested to contact both co-chairs with their email address, institutional
affiliation, and title of their proposed paper. Please note that the SAA has
changed its submission process and participants are strongly encouraged to
familiarize themselves with the new web registration system and deadlines
(http://saa.org/Default.aspx?TabId=1419).
