It has been my impression that many wells and privies on urban sites were
filled in with refuse after they were no longer needed.  In downtown San Diego
the majority of these features seem to have been filled in between 1900 and
1920.  This may be related to the instilation of indoor plumbing, although
more research needs to be done to confirm this.
