Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis (IUPUI) seeks three 
public scholars with expertise in African and African Diaspora Studies for 
tenure-track or tenured appointments:

IUPUI is an innovative, dynamic, urban research university where staff, 
faculty and students are challenged to develop and sustain worthwhile 
educational partnerships with local civic institutions and to make lasting 
contributions to the betterment of humanity. IUPUI has a student body of 
over 29,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students, including 
15 percent of students of color and nearly 1,000 international students 
from 122 countries. Diversity is a core value of the IU School of Liberal 
Arts at IUPUI. In Liberal Arts, we believe that the educational 
environment is enhanced when diverse groups of people with diverse ideas 
come together to learn. Liberal Arts is home to eleven departments 
(Anthropology; Communication Studies; Economics; English; Geography; 
History; Philosophy; Political Science; Religious Studies; Sociology; and 
World Languages and Cultures) and interdisciplinary programs that include 
African American & African Diaspora Studies, Museum Studies, Women's 
Studies, and American Studies. For more than 25 years our African American 
& African Diaspora Studies Program (AAADS) has sought to enhance 
undergraduate education and develop educational partnerships between the 
campus and local black institutions and communities. All three faculty 
positions that will be affiliated with our AAADS Program as the result of 
School of Liberal Arts becoming the recent recipient of $500,000 in new, 
annual base funding to expand such ties and create a national model for 
innovative undergraduate education as well as civic engagement.

PUBLIC SCHOLAR IN AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY AND MUSEUM STUDIES

Job Description: The Program seeks a scholar to be appointed jointly in 
the Department of History and Museum Studies, with an affiliation in the 
African American & African Diaspora Studies Program. This scholar's 
primary responsibility will be to develop relationships and sustainable 
partnerships with area museums and other cultural institutions, and to 
involve IUPUI students in meaningful ways in those collaborations.  Tenure 
will be earned or granted in the Department of History. Community 
engagement and undergraduate education will constitute the core of the 
faculty member's research and teaching agendas. Building on existing 
partnerships between the community and the university, this scholar is 
expected to nurture these relationships between local museums and other 
cultural organizations and institutions. The faculty member's central 
mission will be that of involving undergraduate students, especially 
students of color, in research and to encourage them to pursue graduate 
training and careers in Public History and Museum Studies. This scholar 
will work especially closely with the other Public Scholars in African 
American Studies, Undergraduate Research and Civic Engagement. Successful 
applicant will be expected to teach some courses in the AAADS Program.  
PhD in history or closely related field by time of appointment required.  
Search committee will be interviewing at the AHA.


PUBLIC SCHOLAR IN AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES AND UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH

Job Description: The Program seeks a scholar to be appointed jointly in an 
IU School of Liberal Arts department and AAADS. This scholar's chief 
responsibility will be to develop a strong cohort of undergraduate 
students who engage in meaningful research and creative activity with 
local community organizations. Primary duties will include direct 
mentoring of students as well as promoting and facilitating relationships 
between student researchers and other university faculty in AAADS and 
allied disciplines. He or she will also administer research funds that 
support undergraduate research, including internships at the university's 
community partnership institutions. In so doing, this scholar will 
coordinate their activities closely with the university's office of 
Student Life and Diversity, the Director of Research and Learning, and the 
School of Education to promote undergraduate research, especially among 
students of color, to enhance students' academic achievement and scholarly 
potential. Ph.D. or comparable degree and experience required by time of 
appointment.

PUBLIC SCHOLAR IN AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT

Job Description: To be appointed jointly in an IU School of Liberal Arts 
department and AAADS, this scholar's primary responsibility will be that 
of crafting relationships and sustainable partnerships with institutions 
at the center of African American life in Indianapolis. These include area 
schools, businesses, government agencies, media outlets, performing arts 
and civic organizations, and religious institutions. This scholar may also 
coordinate with the School of Education in establishing and sustaining 
community relationships. While open to all AAADS scholars, preferred 
applicants are those with research centered on African Americans and 
education, media, health care, technology, business, sports, public 
policy, or entertainment. This scholar models life-long engagement in the 
community and will involve students in his or her outreach to local 
African American institutions. Ph.D. or comparable degree and experience 
required by time of appointment.

11/10/06   

Appointment begins: 8/1/07

QUALIFICATIONS AND APPLICATION PROCESS 

The rank of each position is open (Assistant, Associate or Full Professor) 
Applicants are expected to teach at least some courses in the AAADS 
Program. Ph.D. or comparable degree and experience required.  History and 
Museum Studies position requires a PhD in history or closely related field 
by the time of appointment.
