Carl,
 Found one in Surry County Virginia on a site with a late 18th century context (1790s). The site owner was one of some renown and among the finds was one of his Continental Army Officer's buttons, so I likened the Tallio button to be from a possible hunting coat, denoting his obvious life of comfort and leisure time. Have always wanted to follow up that theory and talked to Laura Galke about it recently at the MAAC.  Anyway, my Tallio button was a STAG and not the more popular fox. Curious to learn what you turn up would love to know more about these wonderful finds.

We found a set at UNC Chapel Hill during excavations on the historic campus
a couple years ago, but unfortunately they were in the plow zone. They have
been found in several late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century
military contexts, cited here:
