Leland Ferguson was himself a historical figure in the discipline of
historical archaeology. At a time when the scientific approach to
archaeology was being promulgated by Stan South, Leland provided the
humanist counterpoint that influenced the theoretical trajectory of the
discipline. His chaired the SHA Charleston Conference Plenary Session in
1975 that resulted in the SHA’s 1st Special Publication, *Historical
Archaeology and the Importance of Material Things,* which included papers
by Jim Deetz, Mark Leone, notably Henry Glassie, and others and that
introduced many in the southeast to the humanist perspective. To Stanley’s
chagrin as the Conference Chair.

For those who don’t know his career but should, his JC Harrington Award
biography by Ken Kelly was published in *Historical Archaeology* in 2017
and more recently Kelly Goldberg published an interview with Leland in *HA *in
2022. He left an indelible mark on everyone who’s career he intersected,
of which I am fortunate to be one. And he left an indelible mark on the
field. While his life has ended, his legacy lives on. JW (Joe) Joseph
