Re: post primary context for military buttons. Note that the celebration of guy fawkes day persisted in North America until late nineteenth century-it was known as popes day then later pork day-from 18th century the effigy of guy was a military man dressed in uniform with buttons and other military dress hardware-usually the bonfire site would be the same for many years
