At Cahawba Alabama ( a ghost town/archaeological district) , we had a
structure that was built to be a Cotton Mill in the 1850s.  the plan was
abandoned before the factory was occupied and a northern merchant purchased
the structure and had it converted into a grand  mansion for his family.  
It was huge.  Supposedly the largest home in the state at that time.   The
piping for the factory remained in the walls and  was fed from a nearby
artesian well (supposedly the deepest well in the world in the 1850's - so
famous that President Filmore visited the town just to see the thing).   
Anyway, because artesian well water has a constant tempeture all year
round, it is said that  this was the first "air conditioned" house in
Alabama  (sure, why not?) .    Since the factory did not function, this is
probably not exactly what you are intersted in, but - just in case - I
thought I'd mention it.  The warehouse built for the factory did function 
however, and during the Civil War it was turned into a distillery to
support our boys on the front.  (seriously)  Contact me if you are

The site has not been excavated but parts of the foundation, the well and 
other ruins are still visable on the surface.
