The budget cuts are effecting archaeology but more than that it is the political takeover of archaeology in Italy that is distressing. The government is in the ongoing process of trying to bureaucratize the archaeological superintendent system that rule Italian archaeology. This has forced out many of the archaeological trained superintendent's and many positions have yet to be filled. The government want superintendents that are better managers at the expense of archaeological knowledge. In the meanwhile individual site and park archaeologists are left to their own devices when it comes to administration and budgeting. It is a difficult situation right now especially for non-italians working in the region.
