Shirley Plantation, located in Charles City, VA, began conducting a survey of its shoreline and underwater resources in August 2010 under the direction of property owner Charles H. Carter III, archaeologist Taft Kiser, geologist Charles "Chee" Saunders, and ECU Program in Maritime Studies graduate student Theresa Hicks. Thus far five separate wharves have been documented along with 1600 ft. of shoreline. This past winter/spring, the Shirley crew teamed up with the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) of the College of William and Mary to conduct remote sensing and sediment core sampling analysis of the river along the historic property boundaries.
