A great and worthy idea that does exploit one of the benefits of the web. A question - do you know of any similar set up for Australian history and genealogy that is national yet usefully localised?

Portions of the US Census have been transcribed or PDF images made available
online at the various county web sites for the USGenWeb Project. The state list
is located at: http://www.usgenweb.org/thestates.html

These vary considerably in quality and completeness, county to county and state
to state. In addition, these county locations often include marriage records,
cemetery records, obituaries, newspaper indices, county histories, migration
histories, letters, diaries, bible records, etc. While some of this information
is available from other sources, some of the data are only available online.
These URLs are being updated and expanded exponentially, so check back monthly if
doing serious research on a county.

Also check out the following site:
http://www.usgenweb.org/projects/projects.html

I encourage each historical archaeologist to contribute to this effort as a way
of public education about historical archaeology. Many of us have collected
tidbits of information which could be posted to these county web pages. If we
conducted a project in the county, we owe it to the people there to provide some
information about the project. Please contact the county supervisors listed on
each page.
