From the Ventura Mission site in Ventura, California, 10 crucifixes and nine religious medallions were recovered. during the excavations in 1974 and 1975. The crosses were Franciscan, made of gilded copper, and probably date post 1768. The obverse depicts the crucified Jesus with skull and plaque. On the reverse is the Immaculate Conception and inscription "VIRGO IMA/VITAM/PRESTA/PURAM."
The iconography on the medallions is more diverse, variously depicting St. Anthony, St. Vincent "Ferrer," Our Lady of Carmel, and the cross of St. Benedict. Fuller details are available in The Changing Faces of Main Street by Roberta S. Greenwood, 1976.
