West Virginia University, in conjunction with Blennerhassett Island
Foundation, West Virginia
Division of Tourism and Parks, Horizon Research Consultants, Inc., and the
Natural Resource
Conservation Services, qill be continuing and archeological field school
within the formal garden
area of Blennerhassett Mansion, a late 18th century historic site listed on
the National register of
historic Places.  Excavations during the field school in 1997 have already
identified the remains
of one of the flower beds in the formal garden area, and laboratory
analysis of seed remains from
the excavated feature has identified several types of flowers present in
the garden area, including
rose, violet, and sweet pea.

Through hands-on experience, students will learn basic archaeological
techniques, including
excavation unit placement, stratigraphic and arbitrary excavation, mapping,
photography, and
field illustration. Assigned readings and continuous on-site discussion
will provide the students
with a firm understanding of archeological field work from excavation,
survey, and recordation
to analysis and interpretation of recovered cultural materials.
 
The site is located on an Ohio River island near historic Parkersburg, WV,
in the heart of the
Mid-Ohio Valley. This is an area rich in entertainment with numerous
museums, unique shops,
and many fine restaurants.
