Mary Ellin is correct about customary measurement. For conversion
information with text discussion see:

British Weights and Measures: A history from antiquity to the seventeenth
century.
University of Wisconsin Press 1977.
 
It actually covers more than Britain, and periods later than the
seventeenth century. Charles Gehring of the New Netherlands Project
published a Dutch-English conversion in one of his volumes of edited
documents.
