ANNOUNCING THE 1998 SUMMER FIELD SCHOOL IN PENSACOLA, FLORIDA through the
University of West Florida Archaeology Program. No weekend work and the
beaches are GREAT!
 
This is the last and largest of four seasons of excavations at the EARLY
SPANISH COLONIAL PRESIDIO Santa Maria de Galve occupied between 1698 and
1719.  Students will learn the methods and techniques of archaeology while
excavating the exceptionally well preserved remains of the fort and village
on the 300th Anniversary of the site.  Students will excavate sections of
the wall of the wooden stockade Fort San Carlos de Austria and investigate a
large area of the village occupied by Spaniards and Indians for only 9
years.  There will also be a large PUBLIC ARCHAEOLOGY element to this
season's fieldwork as this excavation will be the center of Pensacola's
300th Anniversary Celebration, and it will include volunteers, an outdoor
lab, visitors, and even a visit of the Tall Ship EL CANO in June.  Hours are
Monday through Friday 8 to 4 PM; no weekend work (Beaches are GREAT); all
equipment but personal items is provided.
No experience necessary.
