A couple of weeks ago, I read this book by John Chapman who argues that
broken pieces carted around are partly personal relic, sort of a physical
tie to the absent past or another person. He's mostly talking about the
Balkan neolithic (and, of course, I know tons about that <not>), but it's
kind of an interesting idea, if you can stand post-processual stuff: Here's
