bournemouth polytechnic in england used to have a good program training "technicians" - i worked with a couple of diggers who came out of there who knew what they were doing - "thanx" to maggie thatcher, bournemouth is now a university, but they seem to have an interesting program all the same -
there is also a certification program in germany, but it tends to be pretty heavy on the roman stuff (air photo analysis that is useless for those engaged in urban sites, etc.) -
there is also a program at the technical college just outside berlin (technische hochschule) - a bit of conservation, excavation techniques, etc. -
which is needed because excavation is not something german archaeologists traditionally have had to deal with: digging was for technicians & workers, not for scholars...
anyway: there are programs out there
