At Fort Johnson, Charleston, South Carolina, USA, I have found a small (19mm
diam) copper coin marked "1 Grote/ 1840" on one side. The other has a shield
capped with a crown. There is some lettering around the edge, but it is
illegible. I have seen numerous references to "Groats" but no "Grote" I
assume its a variant. Anyone have any info on these coins?
Thanks, Carl Steen
