 POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

The Department of Anthropology, University of Maryland, College Park in
a cooperative agreement with the National Park Service seeks a
Historical Archaeologist for a Research Assistant, temporary contract
position.  The candidate will serve as project supervisor and needs to
have expertise in nineteenth-century archaeology and social history in
the Middle-Atlantic region.  A broad background and knowledge of other
eras will be taken into consideration in the selection process.  A
knowledge of Civil War era material culture is also important. The
position is located in Monocacy National Battlefield Park, Frederick,
Maryland.

Candidates will need to demonstrate experience in directing and carrying
out surveys and excavations on historic archeological sites in an
interdisciplinary context.  Knowledge of identifying and assessing
historic archaeological resources and cultural landscapes is
imperative.  The candidate must have a working knowledge of survey
techniques, GIS, and/or CAD applications, and database management
experience.  The selected candidate should also demonstrate knowledge
and skills for conducting small-scale archaeology projects and have the
ability to organize and conduct archaeology projects with volunteer
components.   Research and writing skills are necessary.  A Ph.D. is
preferred in Anthropology or related field.  (All degrees will be
considered).  Please note if the successful candidate does posses a
Ph.D. the title will be Research Associate.

This project is part of a larger series of archeological excavations and
surveys that have been carried out through the University of
Maryland/National Park Service cooperative agreement for the past 15
years.   This project will begin on or about October 1, 2000 and will be
funded for two years.  A third year is possible, depending upon funding.

Salary will range from $35,000 to $40,000 per year depending upon
qualifications.  Ten days vacation and ten days sick leave will be
provided each year.  Employee may enroll in University benefit plans,
but Employer will not provide subsidy for these benefit plans such as
health, life or disability insurance, or retirement.

For best consideration, candidates should have three years supervisory
and archaeological survey experience.   Applicants should submit a
letter of interest, two representative samples of writing, and names of
