Alan Beauregard's master's thesis (c. 1986) brings together a great deal
of historical material on tanning in New York and Pennsylvania. He also
reports on the work that we did at the Hobart Tannery, a small rural
tannery near Penn Yan, New York, back in 1982 or 1983. The excavations
were undertaken as part of a road realignment project. The original
technical report and the thesis are available at the Anthropology
Department and the Public Archeology Facility of Binghamton University.
You might contact Al at KCI Consultants in Pennsylvania.

The Public Archeology Facility also tested one or two large tannery
sites just north of Binghamton, probably more in keeping with the
Bethabara tannery. If memory serves, there is a large interpreted tanney
at the Moravian community in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

If you have trouble tracking down Al Beauregard, let me know, I can find
his address. I also have copies of many published articles on tanneries
in the east that Al gave me some years ago. I might have his thesis as
well.
