AFRICAN-AMERICAN ARCHAEOLOGY
 
                           in ARROW ROCK, MISSOURI
 
        An archaeological field school will be held May 20-31, 1998 by the
Missouri Archaeological Society and the University of Tennessee-Knoxville
in Arrow Rock, Missouri.  After the Civil War, African-Americans moved
into Arrow Rock establishing a strong segregated community.  The 1998
field school will explore Arrow Rock's African-American heritage in two
areas;  Block #30 and north Second Street.  Block #30 contains the
material remains of three residences, a restaurant and bar, an Odd Fellows
lodge, and a Masonic lodge.  North Second Street's archaeological remains
include seven residences, a church, a bar, and a school.
 
        Participants can enroll through the Missouri Archaeological
Society for $100 a week or $20 a day or they can register for three
college credit hours through the University of Tennessee.  Room and board
will not be provided, but can be arranged.
