I fear there is a great world of difference between putting a site into an
economic and social context and the application of “social theory” mined
from sites in France, crushed and concentrated at Oxbridge and smelted by
young grads trying to make a name for themselves. Does anyone else looking
at the history of archaeology get a sense of foreboding.

The key test surely must be will it help us understand the past?
