Mount Vernon Archaeology
(http://www.mountvernon.org/learn/pres_arch) seeks
FIELD ASSISTANT / LABORATORY ASSISTANT to help in the
cataloguing of artifacts excavated at George
Washington's distillery and with fieldwork at the
distillery site. The distillery was housed in a 30 x
75-foot stone still house, erected in 1797, where five
copper stills produced corn and rye whiskey. Located
adjacent to a gristmill and cooperage on the Mount
Vernon plantation, the distillery was a major
commercial venture, producing almost 11,000 gallons of
spirits valued at $7,000 during the second year of its
operation. After a multi-year excavation, the
distillery is currently being reconstructed and minor
excavations are anticipated over the next several
months in conjunction with the reconstruction. Field
work is also planned in Mount Vernon’s Upper or Flower
Garden during the summer in preparation for a major
renovation of that space.

Under the direction of Mount Vernon staff, the field
and lab assistant will carry out the full range of
standard excavation and laboratory procedures, as well
as supervise student interns and volunteers. Other
responsibilities include artifact processing and
analysis, public interpretation, and assisting in
other archaeological projects at Mount Vernon. As
part of the archaeological team, the successful
applicant will have additional opportunities for
professional development which could include
researching aspects of 18th-century distilling and
Washington's distilling venture, designing educational
programs, and synthesizing the archaeological
discoveries.

Applicants should have a Bachelor's degree in
Anthropology/Archaeology or a related field, and have
experience in excavation and laboratory work.
Experience with Rediscovery Software is preferred.
Salary is $11.00 / hour and the position is funded for
six months. There are no benefits.

Please send a resume and cover letter to:

Esther C. White, Director of Archaeology
Mount Vernon Ladies' Association
