I too was raised in north central FL, same time, my doctor uncle swore that
if "you kids don't wear shoes in those orange groves you are going to get
creeping eruption (or creeping crud)."  We never did and I have never
developed a fondness for shoes.  However, the same uncle also dosed us all
once a year with the same huge pink worm pills he gave his cattle--maybe
that saved us.
