Position: Historical Archaeologist/Laboratory Director

Position Location: Maryland State Highway Administration, Baltimore, Maryland



Salary/Benefits: $45,000-$65,000 depending on experience. Position also includes state benefits (health care, 401k, paid holidays, sick leave, and vacation).



Requirements:



A Masters Degree or PhD in anthropology, archaeology or related field with a specialization in historic-period sites.  A minimum of 5 years of field experience with 2 years of supervisory experience; Mid-Atlantic field experience is desired. Applicant should have strong computer skills, be detail-oriented, a self-starter, organized, with solid interpersonal skills.



Description:



The Maryland State Highway Administration (MSHA), Cultural Resources Section is responsible for completing Section 106 reviews, archaeology and architectural history surveys, resource mitigation, etc. related to highway projects statewide. In addition, the Cultural Resources Section supports three stewardship programs: a Native American Consultation Program; Historic Bridge Program; and a Public Outreach Program.



MSHA is looking to fill the position of historical archaeologist/laboratory director.  The position is responsible for managing the laboratory; historic-period artifact analysis; processing collections; public outreach (compiling and editing a newsletter; creation of pamphlets, blogs, posters and other outreach materials); participating in a supervisory capacity in the field; and conducting small project reviews related to MSHA real estate sales and private development access permits. The position will be 80% laboratory/compliance work in an office environment and 20% field work.



Upcoming archaeological projects include: a 17th century domestic site; 18th century taverns; African American Civil War recruiting camp; and 18th century Rochambeau camps. Overnight travel is infrequent.  Peer reviewed publishing and participation in regional and national conferences is strongly encouraged and supported.



Desired Skills and Abilities:



*     The applicant for this position should be comfortable interacting with the public, outgoing, and creative.  The applicant should also show initiative for choosing new projects and creating public outreach opportunities.

*     Skilled in historic-period (17th century-20th century) artifact analysis.

*     Strong verbal, communication, and writing skills.

*     Proficient in Photoshop, Microsoft Word, Access, Powerpoint, Publisher, and Excel.

*     Ability to use GIS.

*     Experienced with using a total station or willingness to train and learn.

*     Experienced in supervising archaeological technicians, volunteers, and students.

*     Ability to understand construction impacts to archaeological sites and suggest management strategies for those sites.

*     Ability to assist principal investigator in surveys and excavations, leading field technicians, volunteers and students, and documenting fieldwork.

*     Process large artifact collections, carrying the work through to final curation in compliance with the state regulations.
