The Hampton Roads District Environmental Section is seeking an Archaeologist
to join our regional cultural resource team serving Southeastern Virginia.
This position ensures archaeological historic property issues are
incorporated into the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of our
transportation facilities.  Applies historic preservation techniques,
principles, and practices in the collection and analysis of cultural
resources data to identify and assess the significance of archaeological
resources, determines the effect of transportation projects on significant
resources, and develops appropriate treatments for affected resources in
project design and construction.  Related responsibilities include
management of the work of VDOT's cultural resource consultants and
coordination of archaeological findings with VDOT's environmental review and
project design and construction staffs, Federal and State regulatory
agencies, local governments, and the general public. 
Experience working with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation
Act of 1966, as amended, and coordinating with Federal and State regulatory
agencies is required.  Consultant management experience and experience
reviewing and writing archaeological technical reports.  Effective
communication skills, both orally and in writing with ability to make
presentations to a large diverse audiences. Proficient  in historic
preservation statutes, regulations, policies, and practices.  Working
knowledge of transportation programs.  Ability to define actions for the
avoidance and/or minimization of impacts to historic properties in the
design and implementation of transportation projects.  Educational and
professional work experience meeting the Secretary of the Interior's
professional qualifications standard for Archaeology (graduate degree in
archaeology, anthropology, or closely related field, and required work
experience). State or regional experience conducting archaeological studies
is preferred.  Safety shoes and valid driver's license are required. DMV
check will be conducted.
