COLLEAGUES TO BE HONORED

The Society for Historical Archaeology and its Award Committee are
pleased to announce [in case you were not in Quebec] that the following
of your colleagues have been selected to date to be honored with SHA
Awards at the upcoming 34th Annual Meeting in Long Beach, California
(January 2001).

J.C. HARRINGTON MEDAL

This award is given for a lifetime of contributions to the field centered
on scholarship. In 2001 the medalist will be:

                ROBERTA S. GREENWOOD

Bobby Greenwood is one of the leading historical archaeolgists on the West
Coast having exavated and published on sites from the contact-period,
Spanish, Mexican and Anglo-American eras as well as on Overseas Chinese
sites in California. SHe is not only one of the leading scholars in our
field, with a career spanning the last three decades, but has also been
very active in professional organizations including the SHA and the former
SOPA.

CAROL V. RUPPE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

This award is given for outstanding contributions and serive to the SHA,
having been presented only twice since its creation in 1990, and in
2001 will go to:

                        NORMAN F. BARKA

Norman is being honored for his seventeen years of service as the Editor
of the SHA NEWSLETTER. He built on a powerful tradition of earlier editors
and enhanced this publication until it is, in our opinion, the best
newsletter in world archaeology.

SHA AWARDS OF MERIT FOR 2001

(1) WILLIAM and EDITH WALLACE of California.

This husband and wife research team were true pioneers in the
building of historical archaeology within the state of California. Early
work in the 1940s and 1950s was extened across the next two decades. They
especially developed a holistic approach to famous California historic
sites, such as the Hugo Reid Adobe in LA, that combined above ground
(architecture) with below ground archaeology.

(2) MARTHA WILLIAMS

Martha is the creator of the formal public aspect of the annual
SHA Meetings. She founded what is today the Public Education and Information
Committee and established the Public Sessions which have been so successful
in opening the annual conference to the general public, pre-college teachers
and their students.

JOHN L. COTTER AWARD IN HISTORICAL ARCHAEOLOGY

The second nomination cycle is now underway and will formally
close on June 30th. When the selection has been made in the Fall the
recipient will be announced on HISTARCH.

We have a rich and exciting agenda for the SHA Awards Ceremony for 2001
in Long Beach. Please come and join us all in honoring your colleagues
in the ceremony on the liner Queen Mary in Long Beach Harbor.
