This goes back to the definition of an archaeologist. I tried to take a
stab at it in Barbara Little's Public Benefits of Archaeology book and
came up with about 10,000, in order to make the point that the reading
public for archaeology was 50 times the size of the professional
population.

But I was counting just people who affiliate with major archaeological
societies, generally people with advanced degrees or working on advanced
degrees who pay their dues. I suspect it includes few field technicians.
The various professional groups (SAA, SHA, AIA, ASOR, AAA archaeology
division, etc.) totals come up to about 20,000, but there is
considerable overlap.

From memory, from when we've bought their mailing lists, I believe
membership levels are at about
SAA-6500
AIA-10,000 (including the local chapters of avocational archaeologists)
SHA-1500
ASOR-1000
AAA-1500
regional and state archaeological societies 100-500 each, including lots
of avocationalists
I don't know the membership of AFTA

Someone who knows each organization more intimately can probably give
you more accurate figures.
