The Lost Towns of Anne Arundel Project is currently testing portions of the
Stephen Steward shipyard, a mid 18th-century commercial shipyard located just
south of Annapolis, Maryland. Current excavations and geophysical testing has
identified portions of two post-in-the ground structures probably related to
the operation of the shipyard. The architecture of these structures suggest
that the posts are quite substantial (Though the full dimensions of the
building are not known at this time) The posts for one of the structures are
approximately 1 ft. in diameter and spaced at approximately 6 ft. intervals.
The building was probably enclosed, heated and had windows.

Some unusual cut brass scraps and possibly melted brass have been recovered
fromt the vicinity of this structure. Few domestic artifacts are associated
with either structure.

Previous excavations at the shipyard have located the remains of a launching
way (for side launching), a careening way, a brick and rubble wharf, and
portions of a third post-in the-ground structures. All three of the post-in-
the ground structures are located 100-150 ft. or more from the
water/wharf/ways.

I am looking for any sort of technical reports detailing the archaeological
excavation of Colonial or British 18th century shipyards. Any help would be
greatly appreciated. I apologize for any cross posting.

Sincerely,

Jason D. Moser
