The Hohokam CULTURE:
ROMERO Ruins AND Baby Jesus Ridge petroglyphS
 Saturday, October 28, 2006

We’ll carpool from the Old Pueblo Archaeology Center on West Ina Road to the Hohokam Romero Ruins site in Catalina State Park, a large residential village occupied between A.D. 700 and 1100. Then we’ll hike to possibly the richest Hohokam rock art site in Southern Arizona, the Baby Jesus Ridge (Sutherland Wash) site east of Catalina, Arizona. This site sits along a streambed below Baby Jesus Ridge and contains many small and large rocks covered with petroglyphs. One is the notable “marker petroglyph” rock (see picture above right) that may have been manually moved in ancient times to its prominent location. These petroglyphs were likely carved by the people who inhabited the Romero Ruins area. Access to the petroglyphs involves a flat, 2- to 3-mile round-trip hike through sandy soil that is not recommended for indoor types. High clearance vehicles capable of traversing a short rough dirt road are required. Riders will share drivers’ gas cost, which will be about $5 per ride!
