Although the HIP debate is fairly new to me, I think that there is probably
a distinction to be made between the motivations of two broad groups of HIP
opponents, (1) Professional musicians, and (2) Listeners. IMHO the first
group is largely motivated by the fear factor (that Don has described),
which I think is largely a result of someone who has a tremendous amount of
time and resources invested in their skills and tools of the trade. Like
many other professionals they are deeply committed in a rigid way to a
single paradigm. IMHO the second group has a wider range of reasons, which
I think comprise everything from simply, not liking the sound of HIP to an
anti-HIP agenda. How the music moves me is what's important, whether I am
enjoying LvB's 9th conducted by Bruggen or Szell.
