There are many outstanding works for solo violin which I would like to
add to this list.

Milton Babbitt's Melismata (1982) is a demanding 20-minute work that is
well worth the attention of any serious violinist.

Pierre Boulez's Anthemes (1992) is stunningly beautiful.  Though not
tonal, it is the most tone-centric work of his I've heard.

Artur Schnabel wrote a 50-minute sonata for solo violin.  The work is
an epic journey with extraordinary structural coherence for a work that
size...if Wagner had written a solo violin sonata, this is what it would
be like.  It is unpublished, but the heirs of Artur Schnabel are happy
to authorize photocopies of the manuscript, which Paul Zukofsky is able
to make.  The manuscript is in Berlin and may not be photocopied.

The Roger Sessions Sonata (1953) is indeed available.  Most college
libraries have it, and though it is out of print, send some money to the
publisher and they will send you an authorized photocopy.  It is well
worth it to perform this dramatic work, which even audiences unfamiliar
with any classical music can appreciate.

A few works I recommend but am less familiar with:
Samuel Adler's Canto 3.
Eduard Boguslawski's Preludi
Elliott Carter's Four Lauds (the Riconoscenza per Goffredo Petrassi
is the most famous)
Hindemith and Henze have interesting solo sonatas, as do Krenek,
Kirchner, and Shapey.
Sven-David Sandstrom has the haunting Diabas, written for a violin made
of rock!
The film composer Miklos Rosza has an intriguing solo sonata.

Not for the faint of heart are the following ultra-modern works:
Stockhausen, In Friendship
Xenakis, Mikka
Scelsi, Divertimento
