The KuBu (Kulturbund) a specially "licensed" group of Jewish musicians
permitted to play only to Jewish audiences, and to them, only by
subscription, did perform Mahler with some frequency.  They were not
allowed to perform music by German composers.  Handel was permitted for a
time, not because he had become British, but because, as the composers of
operas like *Israel in Egypt*, *Judas Maccabaeus*, and *Solomon*, he was
believed to be Jewish!  Mozart, Haydn and Schubert were originally allowed
but became verboten after the Anschluss w/ Austria.  Much of this is
described in great detail in Martin Goldsmith's recent book *The
Inextinguishable Symphony*.
