A few weeks ago, I the collection of Handel's oratorios on Brilliant The
other works are Solomon, Semele and Thedora. I'm listening to Judas right
now and I'm enjoying it. I'm far from an expert, but the recorded sound,
the English Chamber Orchestra and the singers and chorus sound very fine.
If the others are like this one, the collection is an incredible bargain.
In fact, if only Judas is excellent, getting just one good oratorio out
of the collection is worth the price.

One thing I don't understand about the recording is having a contralto,
Helen Watts, sing the role of Israelite Man. Was this customary during
Handel's time? Why not have a tenor sing the role? I find it hard to
believe that Baroque tenors were hard to find. If any members can clear
this up for me, I would appreciate it.

Thanks.
