Some of Mahler's rescoring does consists of minor touches, such as
adding string bass parts to Schubert's "Death and the Maiden" quartet in
his string orchestra version of it. I've never heard the GM's Beethoven
9th, but I did meet the conductor of one of the recordings of it. As I
understand things GM added a second quartet of horns and a second set of
timpani for starters. I've heard a live Beethoven 9th and a live Beethoven
7th (Indiana Unviersity orchestras) where they doubled the woodwinds (and
the horns in the 7th) and used huge string sections (10 basses in #7). Not
bad if you like your Beethoven Wagnerian.
