The man in the Verklaerte Nacht story is faced with a very difficult
situation. As I have never been confronted with this situation I don't
know how I would react--the resolution in the poem that moved Schoeberg
shows a very difficult and most likely rarefied level of forgiveness
from a man who appears to have an equally rarefied measure of mental and
spiritual stability--quite the opposite of sickness. Perhaps it was this
that brought out the overwhelmingly beautiful music that Schoenberg
composed.
