This may be a touch off topic, but I have been reading an excellent
novel which I recommend to my music-loving colleagues. Vikram Seth's "An
Equal Music" is a fine tale that revolves around the life of a group of
professional musicians. The author has done his homework and the way he
describes the lives of the musicians is accurate and believable. He also
mentions quite a few works of music that are of interest, esp. Beethoven's
Quintet op. 104, which is central to the story. Decca have released a two
disc set of the music mentioned in the book. One caveate re the discs:
Decca claims that the Op. 104 is a premier recording. 'Tis not, I have a
Supraphon disc from the 70's available at mid price by the Suk quartet and
guest violist of op 4 and 104. These quintets are arrangements of earlier
trios. Nice music though and a good read!
