He converted in 1897 in order to be able to be appointed as director of
the Vienna Hofoper.  There is no evidence that he was a genuine believer
in either Catholicism or Judaism AFAIK.  I read once somewhere (but don't
recall where -if anyone knows of a source for this I'd be grateful) that
Mahler said he could never compose a Latin Mass because he could not bring
himself to set the words of the Credo.
