Opera Singer Susan Chilcott Dies

   LONDON - Susan Chilcott, one of Britain's leading opera
   singers, died Thursday from breast cancer.  She was 40.

   Chilcott, a soprano, had performed across Europe and with
   the Metropolitan Opera in New York City.  She died at her
   home near Bath in southwestern England, her family said.

   Chilcott made her Royal Opera House debut in Covent Garden
   last June to glowing reviews, playing Lisa in Tchaikovsky's
   "Queen Of Spades" opposite Placido Domingo.

   One critic wrote that she was "a natural: tall, beautiful and
   seemingly fearless on stage."
