I recall hearing on the radio a few years back a work purporting to be
a cello cocnerto by Mozart.  I recall no details and I didn't believe
it then.

Why?  Perhaps he needed a cello virtuoso either to commission (e.g.
the flute concertos) or inspire (the clarinet masterpieces) him.
