It's not the cello -- but, almost!  Have you ever listened to music for
viols? They are the precursor to cellos, violas and violins, and I find the
sound absolutely haunting.

Try suites for viol from Marin-Marais, or M.  de Saint-Colombe (Did you
ever see TOUS LES MATINS DU MONDE?).  I love the way Jordi Savall plays --
you may start with his recordings.
