I have a book by the critic Jim Svejda and he prefers the Heifitz/Reiner
recording for its technical perfection and Heifitz's extraordinary first
movement cadenza and the Oistrakh/Ormandy recording for its tonal color.
Both are available at Amazon. Listen to Oistrakh play. Wow! Classic CD
Magazine just ranked him as the 2nd greatest instrumentalist of the century
(after Richter but before Horowitz).
