Yes, it's sad that respect and admiration for composers (and others) often
turns into blinding hagiography. I was once cut out of a conversation
entirely for saying that Mozart had once erred (the triplets before the
double bar in the first movement of K. 297 to be precise). I would
definitely not say that Mozart is overrated, but I've never found Idomeneo
to be worth all the hoop-la that it generates.
Having done a recent (albeit small scale) study of Schumann symphonies I am
beginning to consider him to be a successor of Mozart moreso than Beethoven
was. Has this been advanced before?
