Lilypond, the music typesetting package of the GNU project, "produces
beautiful sheet music using a high level description file as input". It
will compile on most Unix-like systems, and runs on Windows NT/95/98 too.
You will also need a working TeX or LaTeX system.

Naturally, all the code is free, both as in "free beer" and "free speech".

Several object-code packages for those who prefer not to compile their own
software are available. Try:

for the project's homepage.
