Two editions of The New Yorker's "Musical Events" by Andrew Porter (now
music critic for the London Financial Times) have the following notes:
- the Passacaglia of the finale of Schnittke's First Cello Concerto (1986)
derives from Schnittke's music for the 1974 film "The Agony" (May 20, 1991)
- Corigliano's "Three Hallucinations" is derived from his score of Ken
Russell's film "Altered States" (Jan. 13, 1997)
I'm sure there are a few more - particularly in 20th Century Russian music.
Besides Schnittke, Prokofiev, Gubaidulina and Shostakovich wrote film
music. Shostakovich, in order to keep his family fed, wrote music for
approximately 40 films during the period between "Lady Macbeth" and the
death of Stalin.
