Actually, i think is a problem.  Out in the real world, applause is
given for a good show; but in some territories, musicians seem to have
grown accustomed to the belief that it should be delivered simply because
they bothered to show up.  The new audiences which the field needs
desperately to remain viable pick up on this self-congratulatory quality
pretty quickly - especially when they see standing ovations granted to
poor (or at least: ordinary) performances - & they soon find better
things to do with their entertainment dollars.
