Vaughan Williams "Sonfonia Antarctica" (Symphony #7) is some of the most
sonicaly descriptive music ever written for film (Scott Of The Antarctica,
1947). Transcribed for symphony orchestra with soloist and chorus, it was
recorded in 1953 by Sir Adrian Boult conducting the London Philharmonic
and chorus, soprano Margaret Ritchie with spoken superscriptions by Sir
John Gielgud. Fortunatly the original mono recoding is currently available
lovingly restored (in the USA London 425 157-2). I stongly recommend the
recording for its sensitive recreation of a logically constructed scenic
suite and the wonderful spoken text by Sir John. (The 1953 sonics are very
good in the context of the time.)
