Well, it turns out there are different database services used by
various players. After I bought an Apple iPod (THEIR spelling.....),
I complained to the Gracenote database folks about the way their system
handles classical music (one genre only:"Classical"). I was assuming
that iTunes for the iPod, Windows Media Player, and all other mp3 players
used the same database. The reply, in part:

"Microsoft doesn't use our database, they're not currently a
licensee, but iTunes is - and they've decided not to use our
   genres!"
