Yo-Yo Ma Takes Musical Journey to Rio
Mon Jul 28, 4:51 PM ET

NEW YORK - He has rocked with Bach, fiddled with Appalachia, crouched
with tigers, tangoed in Argentina, traded on the Silk Road. Now, Yo-Yo
   is going Rio.

Cellist Yo-Yo Ma celebrates Brazil's unique musical style in his new
album, "Obrigado, Brazil." It brings together some of Brazil's leading
musicians in a carnival of sambas and bossa novas, contemplative
   classics and heartfelt choros.

The album - as diverse as Brazil's Native, Portuguese and African
roots - was being released Tuesday.

Who better to bring Brazil north than a Paris-born Chinese-American
ambassador of communication who has an anthropology degree from Harvard
and mixes technical precision with sensuality to break down language
   and cultural barriers?

With his charisma and passion, Ma has brought the music of Bach,
Appalachia, China, Central Asia and Argentina to millions via his
more than 50 albums. His next project takes him back to the traditional
repertoire: baroque Italy and an album of Vivaldi cello concertos.

In an interview, the 47-year-old Ma revealed a long fascination with
Brazil's music and pluralistic culture dating to the transistor radio
days, when as a 12-year-old growing up in New York he stumbled on
   ethnic stations.
